we, in san francisco, can be proud of our history and our right of women to choose, and here in san francisco, because of the efforts of many people, including supervisor cohen, were one of the first cities to pass an ordinance forbidding crisis pregnancy centers that do not provide or refer abortion care from continuing to use deceptive advertising to take advantage of vulnerable pregnant women. so it's something to be proud of. and our own mayor has also cosponsored a resolution approved by the u.s. conference of mayors where the right of women to choose was also reaffirmed. we will be having a celebration of women life and liberty on january 26, 2013, at jefferson herman plaza. through this resolution, we as a reaffirming the importance of reproductive health rights and justice, and we commend the work of the7[ úv pro-choice workersd service providers, who make sure that the rights embedded ingfjhe v wade are protected in san francisco. the last item i have is an item -- and i want to thank supervisor christina+!jpgn al r working on this. a number of serious allegations have been made an

san francisco is no different. and i have shared that emotional experience with the supervisor and everybody here, in our law enforcement, and in our health department as well. the question for us, then, is what do we do about it? and not only can we share in this tragedy and signal our sympathies to the families as we've done, but we've got to do something more. and this is where i want to make sure i recognize all of the people that are in that effort of doing something about it, including the officials in san francisco. and some have been at this longer than others to try to do something about it, have reached limitations. yet again, i think this tragedy at sandy hook reminds us that we've got to keep trying and we've got to keep doing more about it. and, so, i want to first of all recognize that senator feinstein, in my conversations with her, and the tragedies she's experienced as mayor of san francisco as well as her attempts to ban assault weapons and had done so in the past, and that her federal assault leg

as far as gun violence in san francisco, i know that that's a hot button issue right now. our homicide rate is at 67, which is up 30 some odd percent from last year, but the spike is pretty much attributed real specifically to the house street quipb quin tup quintupple homicide in april. overall gun violence in san francisco is down 7 percent when nationally gun violence is up pretty much across the board, so we have had good luck unfortunately though the fatal violence in san francisco due to those 3 windows that i described is up. it is, however, the fourth best year in the last 10 when you talk about totals. going back a little bit, obviously it bears mentioning what happened in newtown, connecticut, the unimaginable tragedy that everybody's been talking about nationally. i think it's important that everybody take notice that the teachers at that school and the officers that responded did so as we've been training since columbine also here in san francisco and i think were it not for the heroic efforts of both the teachers and officers that that tragedy would have been
